It’s a whole-system approach that integrates environmentally responsible practices into every stage of a building’s life cycle. This includes energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, the use of sustainable and recycled materials, and designing for adaptability and resilience.

LETI Checklist: The Sustainable Blueprint

You may have heard of LETI (the London Energy Transformation Initiative). LETI is an independent organisation providing design guidance to achieve net-zero carbon buildings. Their Climate Emergency Design Guide is a handy checklist for anyone looking to create buildings that are truly future-proof.

So, what does LETI recommend? Here are some key principles:

  • Energy Efficiency: The first step is to reduce energy demand as much as possible. This means designing buildings with thick insulation, airtight construction, and optimising natural light and ventilation. It’s all about keeping the heat in during the winter and keeping it out in the summer, minimising the need for artificial heating and cooling.
  • Low Carbon Materials: The construction industry is responsible for a significant chunk of global carbon emissions, with much of it coming from the production of materials like concrete and steel. LETI advocates for using materials with lower embodied carbon, such as timber (which can store carbon) and other renewable or recycled materials.
  • Renewable Energy: Sustainable buildings should be powered by renewable energy, whether that’s through on-site solar panels, wind turbines, or buying energy from renewable sources. The goal is to move away from fossil fuels entirely and towards a more sustainable energy system.
  • Operational Efficiency: Even after the building is constructed, it needs to be run efficiently. This involves using smart technology to monitor energy use, adjusting heating and lighting automatically, and ensuring that the building operates as efficiently as possible over its lifetime.

Biodiversity Net Gain: Putting the ‘Nature’ in Architecture

Enter Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), a concept that requires developers to leave the natural environment in a better state than it was before.

And it’s not just about aesthetics (though a lush green wall is certainly a visual treat)—it’s about providing habitats for wildlife, enhancing biodiversity, and creating healthy, pleasant spaces for people.

Incorporating BNG into your project can have a number of benefits. It can improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, and even increase property values. Plus, there’s nothing quite like the serenity of being surrounded by nature. Who wouldn’t want a building that’s not just environmentally friendly, but also a mini oasis for both humans and animals alike?

 

RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge: The Industry Standard

As a RIBA Chartered Practice, we’re fully committed to the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge. This ambitious initiative calls on architects to meet a series of tough targets aimed at reducing operational energy, embodied carbon, and potable water use, while enhancing health and well-being.

The targets are split into three phases—by 2025, 2030, and beyond. Here’s what the 2030 goals look like:

  • Operational Energy: The goal is to reduce operational energy consumption to 35 kWh/m²/year for homes and 55 kWh/m²/year for commercial buildings.
  • Embodied Carbon: By 2030, the embodied carbon in new buildings should be reduced to 300 kgCO2e/m² or lower.
  • Water Use: Potable water use should be reduced to 75 litres per person per day for homes, and 50 litres per person per day for offices.
  • Health and Well-being: Ensure that buildings enhance occupant health through good indoor air quality, access to natural light, and spaces that promote physical and mental well-being.

For small domestic projects or commercial fit-outs, this might seem like a tall order—but it’s entirely possible with the right approach. By working with architects who are committed to these standards, clients can be confident that their projects are not only compliant with future regulations but also leading the way towards a more sustainable, climate-resilient built environment.

Net Zero: What Does It Really Mean?

Net Zero is a term being thrown around a lot lately, but what does it actually mean? In simple terms, Net Zero means that the amount of carbon emissions produced by a building (during both construction and operation) is offset by the amount of carbon that is either removed from the atmosphere or avoided altogether.

Achieving Net Zero involves a combination of reducing energy demand, using renewable energy sources, and offsetting any remaining emissions through activities like reforestation or investing in carbon capture technologies. For smaller projects, achieving Net Zero may involve careful planning, but it’s certainly not out of reach.

For example, a small domestic project could use low-carbon materials like cross-laminated timber, ensure airtightness and high levels of insulation, and generate power through solar panels. Meanwhile, a commercial fit-out might incorporate energy-efficient HVAC systems, LED lighting, and smart controls that minimise energy consumption.

The key to Net Zero is early planning and integration. The sooner sustainability is considered in a project, the easier it is to design a building that meets Net Zero standards. This is where working with a sustainability-focused architect (like us!) really pays off.

For commercial fit-outs, sustainability can be achieved by choosing energy-efficient appliances, minimising waste during construction, and using recycled or low-carbon materials. Sustainable office design might also incorporate biophilic elements, like indoor plants or green walls, to improve air quality and boost employee well-being.

In both cases, it’s about making smart choices that reduce the environmental footprint of the project while improving the overall experience of the building’s occupants.
