Project Summary
Atelier Ellis Architects collaborated with Crofton Interiors to transform an underutilised basement space within The Whiteley into a premium padel facility. Working within the constraints of an existing building, the project carefully balanced spatial limitations, acoustic performance and technical coordination to create a high-quality recreational environment that complements one of London’s most significant mixed-use developments.
The Brief
As part of the wider regeneration of The Whiteley, the project sought to introduce a dedicated padel facility within the existing basement accommodation.
The available space presented significant design challenges, with fixed structural constraints, restricted dimensions and neighbouring uses all influencing the final layout. The objective was to maximise the quality of the playing experience while carefully integrating the facility into the existing building fabric.
Our Response
Working collaboratively with Crofton Interiors, Atelier Ellis Architects developed the provided interior architectural design and technical coordination for the new padel facility, adapting the available accommodation to create a welcoming and highly functional recreational space.
The project required careful coordination between the architectural, structural and building services design to ensure the specialist requirements of the court could be successfully accommodated within the constraints of the existing building. Supporting spaces, circulation and services were planned to maximise usability while maintaining the quality expected throughout The Whiteley development.
