The Lighthouse - St Francis Church

The Lighthouse is a new-build community hub at St Francis Church in Croydon. Atelier Ellis Architects started on the project in 2017, working on the concept design, planning permission, tender development, construction, and completion.

The shape and form is a contemporary reinterpretation of the existing Church, using a minimal material palette of natural hard-wearing materials and Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) Structure which has been celebrated internally. The building makes use of natural light and merges the boundaries between inside and outside.

Previously the site had two temporary portacabins, what was a short-term solution had grown to a long-term solution that no longer worked for our Client.

Located in a 1950’s residential estate and enclosed on two sides by houses with the front and west of the site road facing. The location of the new build hall faces the street and aligns to the boundary of site.

This was an exciting project to be a part of, we assisted our Client with making funding applications.

At Atelier Ellis Architects we are passionate about making spaces that hit our client's project brief. The end result is something that both our client and we are proud of. This is an exciting addition to a local community and we cant wait to hear the impact it has played and supported the local community with.
